$200,000--received from an anonymous donor in support of a variety of campus programs: the Arboretum; a graduate fellowship in ocean health; and STEPS Institute graduate fellowships and research. This gift represents the first major individual donor funding for STEPS Institute graduate fellowships, which are a prime example of UCSC's strength in interdisciplinary research. $150,000--provided by the estate of Esther Rice for the University Library History Photographs Collection. This gift will support the preservation, protection, and research accessibility of historic photographs in Special Collections. $50,000--contributed by UCSC parent Robert H. Bisno to support graduate education in the Baskin School of Engineering. The gift provides low to 0% loans to engineering graduate students who demonstrate financial need. $50,000--donated by Carl Walsh, professor of economics, and his wife, alumna Judy Walsh, research and development director for the New Teacher Center, to establish the Walsh Family Scholarship Endowment supporting undergraduate scholarships for students in social sciences majors. In recognition of the gift, a room in Social Sciences 1 has been named the Eugene and Bessie Walsh Conference Room in honor of Carl's parents. $30,000--presented by the Ong Corporation to create the Juei-Ming Ong Computer Center, a state-of-the-art computer center for the students of Merrill College. This gift is a direct enhancement for student research and scholarship activities.
RECORD-BREAKING FUNDRAISING FOR SCHOLARSHIPS The first annual UC Santa Cruz Scholarships Benefit Dinner and related activities raised more than $500,000, to be used for new scholarships and fellowships and to increase existing student support funds. (press.ucsc.edu/text.asp?pid=408) Student support generated by this event included new scholarships for undergraduates in humanities, computer science, and engineering, including a scholarship from Adobe Systems for students in the multicultural engineering program, and graduate support in engineering. The Alumni Association Scholarship Fund and Resident String Ensemble Scholarship Fund were among existing student support funds that benefited from the event. Major individual donors included parents of UC Santa Cruz students and graduates, alumni, foundations, corporations, and other campus friends.
INAUGURAL UC SANTA CRUZ FOUNDATION MEDAL AWARDED Presentation of the first UC Santa Cruz Foundation Medal was a highlight of the Scholarships Benefit Dinner on October 11. Fabricated from materials unique to UC Santa Cruz--a bronze-framed lens shaped by David Hilyard of the UCO/Lick Optical Labs from remnants of a Keck Telescope mirror and mounted on a base of campus-quarried limestone--the medal was presented to honor the exceptional career of UC President Emeritus Richard C. Atkinson.
REPRESENTATIVE FUNDRAISING ACTIVITIES BY FACULTY In keeping with fundraising priorities to support student aid, faculty research, academic programs, and campus facilities, many faculty have come forward to participate in the development of a campus culture of philanthropy. Here are some examples. Murray Baumgarten, professor of literature, has met with foundation officers to advance proposals for funding a Center for Jewish Studies. Michael Hutchison, professor of economics and department chair, is fostering relationships with individuals who are interested in funding international economics. He is engaging some of them through involvement in the Santa Cruz Center for International Economics Advisory Board. Campbell Leaper, College Nine and College Ten provost, is participating in efforts to provide donor-naming opportunities within those colleges. Chip Lord, professor of film and digital media, is working with a prospective alumni donor to arrange a visit and lecture on campus. Catherine Cooper, professor of psychology and education, and Manuel Pastor, professor of Latin American and Latino studies, are pursing a major grant opportunity to deepen community partnerships around education equity.

NEW LITERATURE DEPARTMENT PROTOTYPE ALUMNI E-NEWSLETTER In a pilot project with the Literature Department, chaired by Carla Freccero, University Relations is developing an electronic newsletter template to help academic departments create an e-newsletter for their alumni. The UR-departmental newsletter collaboration aims to increase alumni interest and support for academic departmental priorities by furthering relationships among alumni, their former faculty, and the departments from which they graduated. The pilot project will launch soon, and we anticipate working with other departments in the future. Contact Lynn Zachreson for more information at ext. 9-5842 or lynnz@ucsc.edu.
FACULTY STAY IN TOUCH WITH ALUMNI VIA ONLINE COMMUNITY Faculty can use the Alumni Association Online Directory to search for and contact former students via e-mail or mail. Faculty can also list themselves in the Online Directory so former students can get in touch. The first step in using this service is to register for the password-protected Online Community (pick a username and password). Register at www.ucsc.onlinecommunity.com/authenticate.htm. Questions may be directed to Lisa Bono at ext. 9-3058 or lbono@ucsc.edu.
