Cornerstone Campaign Report

The Cornerstone Campaign is well on its way to surpassing its $50 million goal. The public phase of the two-year campaign, which encompasses gift and pledge totals from the 2004 and 2005 fiscal years, was announced at last fall’s Scholarships Benefit Dinner. All areas of the campus are benefiting from the campaign, with undergraduate and graduate student support a focus.

The campaign total as of January 31 includes $4.6 million raised for student support, including $1.2 million raised this fiscal year for graduate support. The overall campaign goal for student support is $5 million, representing a substantial increase over historic totals.

Campaign Highlights

Lead Gift

  • $17.5 million from Moore Foundation to UCO/Lick Observatory, which is directing the UC initiative on phase two of the Thirty-Meter Telescope project

Notable Campaign Achievements and Activities

  • 36 percent of campaign donors are alumni
  • $2.4 million raised for student support in FY04, a 174 percent increase over the previous FY
  • $1.5 million total to support scholarships and fellowships raised from 2003 and 2004 Scholarships Benefit Dinners and associated activities
  • $1.16 million, highest total ever, FY04 Telephone Outreach Program
  • More than $245,000 raised in FY04 reunion giving
  • Nearly $80,000 raised in first-ever Reunion Match Challenge Program, resulting in a significant increase in reunion gifts to colleges
  • Launched Alumni Colleges Fund Tiles Program to increase colleges’ long-term and current-use funds
  • Redesigned UCSC online giving pages, incorporating electronic campaign communications

Recent Major Gifts

  • $6.5 million real estate gift from Texas Instruments
  • $4 million+ from Moore Foundation for ocean sciences research
  • $1.4 million planned gift from Kit Mura-smith for scholarships and the library, the largest gift ever from a graduate
  • $1 million from Barbara Snader estate for engineering scholarships for women
  • $500,000 from Bunny and Miller Outcalt estate for library Special Collections
  • $400,000+ from Rena Perlino estate for psychology research
  • $200,000+ from emerita faculty member Jean Langenheim for PBS fellowships
  • $200,000 from anonymous donor for the Arboretum and various PBS fellowships and research
  • $200,000 from Rebecca and Steve Sooy for PBS fellowship
  • $150,000+ from Esther Rice estate for library Special Collections

Volunteer Leadership

  • Gordon Ringold, chairman and CEO of SurroMed and contributor of the largest outright gift ($500,000) from a UC Santa Cruz alumnus, is Campaign Council chair.

The Public Affairs unit of University Relations has supported the announcement of Chancellor Denice D. Denton’s appointment through a variety of means.

Faculty Invited to Banana Slug Spring Fair 2005

The annual event, featuring many opportunities for alumni to reconnect with faculty, is scheduled for Friday through Sunday, April 15–17. Alumni will be celebrating reunion years '00, '95, '90, '85, '80, '75, and '70.

All-Alumni Reunion Luncheon

On Saturday, all alumni are invited to celebrate UCSC’s 40th Anniversary with special recognition for alumni celebrating 5- to 35-year reunions.

Annual Distinguished Faculty Lecture by Professor of Psychology Craig Haney

Haney is one of the nation's leading experts on capital punishment. His testimony has been critical in landmark rulings, including a decision about conditions at California's Pelican Bay Prison. Haney received the UCSC Alumni Association Distinguished Teaching Award in 2001.

Annual Alumni Panel Discussion Featuring 1975 Graduates

• Philip Brookman (Porter '75, B.A. 20th-Century Art History and Fine Arts). Brookman is senior curator of photography and media arts at the Corcoran Gallery of Art. He has curated scores of critically acclaimed exhibits, unveiling gritty and evocative realities.

• Laurie Garrett (Merrill '75, B.A. Biology). Garrett is a Gates Senior Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. A science and health writer, she is the only person to be awarded all three of the major prizes in journalism: the Peabody, the Polk, and the Pulitzer.

• Carol Realini (Oakes '75, B.A. Mathematics). Realini is a veteran of three decades in technology and one of the industry's most accomplished entrepreneurs.

• Gordon Wiltsie (Kresge '75, B.A., double major: Individual Major and Literature/Creative Writing). After more than 25 years leading and photographing expeditions to the Earth's wildest corners, Wiltsie has achieved international acclaim for his visual artistry.

Alumni Invite Faculty to Speak around the Country

Marc Mangel is planning a talk at the Rainier chapter during travel to Seattle in May, and Bettina Aptheker accepted an invitation from the Boston chapter to give a talk while she is there on other business later this month. Several of her former students are looking forward to her talk, "Making a Feminist Agenda in Hard Times."

Alumni groups around the country are eager to host faculty speakers. If you are traveling to Los Angeles, San Diego, Sacramento, Washington, D.C., New York or Boston and would be willing to fit a talk into your schedule, please contact Allison Garcia in the Alumni Office at acgarcia@ucsc.edu or 459-3966.
